Arbitrary airport charges
The Editor, Sir:

I am concerned about what's going on at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.

My daughter and I were travelling home to England from said airport and attempted to check in our luggage.

My daughter was told that her suitcase was nine kg overweight - which was ridiculous as she left 'tons' of items in the apartment for the room attendants - and was told to pay £90 in cash, which she did but didn't get a receipt!

Honest practice?

Then, it was my turn. I was told my overweight luggage was going to cost me a staggering £140.

After protesting and getting nowhere I explained that I would have to pay by credit card. We couldn't believe it when I was told to "go on."

If I had offered to pay in cash as my daughter did, they would have relieved us of £230. Is this practice honest?

Someone should investigate what's happening at the airport, as I for one will not be returning to Negril. We've travelled the world and have never experienced anything like this, ever.

I am, etc.,
