Being a senior citizen, I am able to compare Christmas of yesteryear and Christmas of today, and it is my belief that Christmas of yore meant much more than material things, as it is today.
In those days, we really cared for each other. Even if you were very poor, you had a fabulous Christmas because family and friends saw to it that you were never left out of the celebrations.
Cramped by crime
In those days, it was a joy to get up early on Christmas morning to attend the 5 a.m. service. Alas, today none of our churches conducts a service at this time because of the level of the crime in our blessed country, and so it is the innocent who suffer.
It was a joy to go promenading on King Street on Christmas Eve without fear that you would be robbed . Try doing that today!
When are we going to revert to the good old days by loving our fellowman and serving the Lord?
Those who care
However, there are still people in this country who ensure that the ones who cannot help themselves get the necessary help. For this, the whole country must be grateful that there is still some good in some of us and that the Lord continues to smile upon us and implore us to turn away from our wicked ways.
I still look forward to the egg nog on Christmas morning and the wonderful Christmas lunch with all its trimmings - stuffed turkey or chicken, plum pudding with sauce - and having loved ones around you. I only hope this year
I am, etc.,
