The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn is reported to have lambasted communities for practising a culture of silence, where the 'informer fi dead' mentality allows criminals literally to get away with murder.
Where has the DPP been all this time? Many citizens believe they are alive today because of their silence, blindness and deafness.
But this is no overnight phenomenon, but stems from careful conditioning over the years of observing other citizens brutally murdered for violating the unofficial 'secrets act'.
Mistrust of law enforcers
The greatest concern in sharing information with the police is the public's fear of the members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and their penchant for compromising their sources. There is also the perception that the criminal underworld has more intelligence and more resources than the police.
If there is a mistrust of law enforcement agents and a lack of confidence in their abilities, how comfortable should people feel putting their lives out on a limb when they know the state is unable or unwilling to protect them?
There is a serious disconnect with reality in our appointed and elected officials.
