KELLY'S WORLD - Year in review

Daviot Kelly

I probably won't have time to do it before the New Year so I thought it best to do my year in review now. As this was an Olympic year, I think I should give this one an Olympic feel. So here goes.

GOLD MEDALS

Usain Bolt - Undeniably gold! Not like he needs any more, he already has three from Beijing. Seriously though, this was the year of the bolt!

The Olympic team - Bolt's heroics aside, the Beijing Olympics Games were Jamaica's most successful.

SILVER

Dr Christopher 'Tuf-times' got a lot of ribbing for his cassava comments. Sounded comical, but at least he was talking sense.

The rather lengthy activities to celebrate the Olympians' homecoming. There were a bit too many events, almost always keeping them up 'til late and some of them were boring. At least the organisers' hearts were in the right place though.

Obama's presidential win - Yes I did give him only silver. He ain't Jamaican; that's the only reason he ain't getting gold.

BRONZE

The West Indies won the big money cricket match and seemingly haven't won a thing since.

All those board members who were sacked: The only reason they don't get lower ranks was because maybe all of them weren't as incompetent as it sounded.

BARELY BRONZE (judges sorry fi dem)

The Jamaica Labour Party: Didn't have a great year either. Scandals and rumours aplenty and just an overall look (at times) of not knowing what the hell they were doing.

The People's National Party: The presidential race got very ugly as expected and the mudslinging saw more dirt than a rally car stage. They did make a lot of (at times meaningful) noise in Parliament however. For the latter reason, they get bronze by photo finish!

The conscience vote on the death penalty was much hyped and in the end took a grand total of about 12 microseconds before it was all over.

NEVER FACED THE STARTER

The sugar divestment process: Has taken waaaay too long. Would have got a bronze but the tales of woe from the workers was too much.

NEVA MEK DI OLYMPIC TEAM

Those who committed of brutal crimes against our women and children.

Those who suffered badly from Gustav when they could have avoided it.

SPECIAL AWARDS

World record - I know they say Jamaicans t'ief, but the 500 truckloads of sand was the biggest heist I have ever seen. I could get into the time it took before someone was finally arrested but I won't. Although, how difficult is it to hide 500 truckloads?

So there you have it. Tell me what I forgot at daviot.kelly@gleanerjm.com.
