Suffolk Downs champion jockey Winston Thompson opened his account at the Aqueduct Fall Meet Wednesday afternoon, when he scored an upset win in the fifth race at the famous New York track.
Fresh from completing his fifth Suffolk Downs jockeys' title in East Boston, Massachusetts, last month, Thompson posted a confident ride aboard the 19-to-1 outsider Taintedlove to win the six-furlong sprint by 4-1/4 lengths.
Thompson used the four-year-old filly to stalk the front-running 57-1 outsider Kaz Court early and took command as the 11-horse field approached the homestretch.
Taintedlove straightened with a clear advantage and finished an easy winner in one minute 13.18 seconds.
Second favourite
The 3-1 second favourite Chernobyl Princess closed on the outside to finish runner-up and Last Desire, a 15-1 bet, was third.
Thompson rode 101 winners at Suffolk Downs this season to reclaim the title he had lost the previous year following an injury. He suffered a badly fractured ankle in a racing accident in August last year and was sidelined for five months after surgery. His title success last month was his fourth in five years.
Thompson was the lone rider to top the century mark for the meet and finished 11 wins ahead of David Amiss, as he added to championship wins in 1995, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
The Suffolk Downs season ended a month ago and Thompson will be based at other tracks during the winter break until the Suffolk Downs 2009 season opens in April.
