Christmas Edition: Picking that divine wine
Nadisha Hunter, Gleaner Writer

Christmas is the ultimate food holiday and no party is complete without a sip of the good stuff. Wine lovers also look forward to the season with great anticipation, as there are so many occasions for sampling wines.

While shopping for items on the Christmas menu, it is the perfect time to splurge on a few bottles of wine.

According to Marilyn Bennett, wine ambassador at J. Wray & Nephew Limited, purchasing wine should not be an intimidating experience.

She cautioned holiday celebrants who are new to the world of wines that they would feel more in control if they kept it simple.

"These persons can select perhaps a Merlot in the red category and a Chardonnay as a white wine," Bennett said. "These wines are typically very easy to drink on their own and are also quite food friendly."

While persons more accustomed to drinking wine should remember their favourites, they should be a bit more adventurous.

"You will definitely enhance your dining experience by purchasing wines to go with your food," added Bennett.

Devon Reid, marketing manager at Caribbean Producers Jamaica Limited, shared similar information. He said wine is a natural partner for food but, with over 1,000 species of wine grapes grown around the world, wines can be daunting for the uninitiated.

The nuances of pairing food and wine must be considered when making selections.

So with the help of the experts, Saturday Life offers some tips on enriching your holiday food and wine experience.
