The true meaning of Christmas
The Editor, Sir:

I write in response to letter of Tuesday, December 9 titled 'Christmas - no true meaning'.

I am assuming that the reverend is of the Christian religion since he refers to "Christ himself." If therefore, "Christmas Day - December 25 is the biggest lie and deception of the Church," then he must know the exact date for his utterances to hold up. More so, then, Good Friday and Easter Sunday should not be commemorated, and if so, when? The birth is dependent on the death, and vice versa. Or is he questioning the existence of Jesus?

If we believe this most wonderful and glorious of accounts, that God took his own Spirit and clothed it in flesh and sent it down to earth as His own Son to redeem mankind from the real deception, our egos, then pick a date, any date. What does it matter, seriously? Christmas has brought more joy (emotionally, spiritually and materially) to more mortals than any other occasion on this planet, period! It is the most wonderful time of the year.

Then so be it

If the decorating of trees and our homes and gardens with multi-coloured lights originated with a pagan festival, then so be it. God is light and in Him there is no darkness, so - let there be light.

I have now grown weary and leery of these efforts seeking to prove that Christ could not have been born on December 25. So is the winter of our discontent made even more miserable by these futile arguments. I say to the reverend, that this is merely another shallow attempt by the anti-Christ to rob mankind of its joy.

The essence of Christ's life and works is what we must ponder and seek to emulate each and every day. His utterances are the creed by which we are instructed to coexist with our fellow human beings.

The true and sole meaning of Christmas is to teach us to spread love and joy all year round in the example of Jesus' life. Yes, it is that simple.

I trust that the reverend is merely seeking to stimulate some kind of debate in an attempt to highlight and garner appreciation for God's greatest gift to mankind.

And so, may the peace, love and joy of Christmas and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit dwell with us today and always.

I am, etc.,

M. EDWARDS
