The letter to the Editor written by Garnet Waite in The Gleaner of December 5, titled 'Fiddling with the economy', should not be overlooked. I agree with everything that he wrote. The Government of Jamaica should take special note. I also believe that, for too long, those put in charge of the economy of the country have failed.
The fiddling with the economy continues even though a change of government has occurred. As a people, we have been waiting, for a long time now, for things to get better. Those who have been holding their breath have long since been dead and buried. The economy continues to deteriorate, at a rapid rate, and all indications are that if a new outlook is not taken, things will continue to spiral downward.
Fresh thinking and bold ideas
We are still waiting to see the fresh thinking and bold ideas, but we seem to be waiting in vain. As was so ably pointed out by Waite, the Government should be "putting (our) financial and academics minds to work". We have the capabilities here. Let's utilise them for our own benefit.
When at least three of the country's leading organisations - The Small Business Association of Jamaica, The Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica and The Jamaica Manufacturers Association of Jamaica - can openly criticise the Bank of Jamaica, even offering solutions to the country's economic problems, it's time to rethink the operations of governance.
Will Jamaica continue to suffer economically, thus breeding criminals and corruption in every area possible while the solutions can be easily had? I think it is time for the prime minister and his team to take firm actions in leading our country out of this rut that we have created for ourselves. We are still waiting for decisive leadership.
I am, etc.,
