Question: What do you think about the decision by members of the House of Representatives to retain the death penalty for capital murder?

Sion Mahon, 25, IT specialist:

It's a good move in crime fighting. However, I think the Government should have reviewed the current justice system before making such a drastic move, for example, the backlog of cases, both locally and in the Privy Council, not to mention individuals who are innocent but are convicted for whatever reason. They might end up losing their lives and I believe that's an abuse of human rights.

Gweneth Edwards, 51, postmaster:

I don't believe in hanging. Yes, I understand the pain that the relatives of the victims are feeling, but everybody deserves a second chance. Jesus Christ did not come for the righteous persons; he came for the notorious sinners. My Bible tells me, 'Leave all vengeance to God', and everyone is going to get his or her just pay.

I don't think hanging criminals will reduce crime either; it has to start from the foundation, which is in the homes. The question is: What would Jesus do?

Nelka Clarke, 24, systems administrator

I definitely agree with their decision. Honestly, I believe there are some serious, heartless and organised criminals out there and you can't deal with them on an ordinary level. Drastic measures have to be taken! However, I do not think that hanging can manage crime in the country, but it is a step in the right direction.

Keith Francis, 29, police constable

As it relates to hanging, I am in full support of the decision to resume hanging. The reason is that those who go around wreaking havoc and creating mayhem must be dealt with severely. They (the Government) must hang dem high! As long as they are found guilty of the crime, immediately they should face the gallows.

This will minimise crime, and if I know that I'm going to commit murder, I will give it second thought, because I know what the consequences will be if I'm caught.
