Nelson

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

Jamaican forward Roen Nelson emerged as the leading non-national scorer in the 2008 Trinidad and Tobago's Pro-League season that ended his past weekend.

Playing for ex-champions Joe Public, Nelson netted 14 goals during the season to finish fourth in the overall scoring table.

Defence Force striker Devon Jorsling was the 'Golden Boot' winner, leading the scoring with 21 goals, followed by Joe Public's Kerry Baptiste (18) and St Ann's Rangers' Josimar Belgrave (15), as local players secured the top frame positions in the scoring table.

The 28-year-old Nelson is in his fifth season with Joe Public and has scored over 100 goals for the Jack Warner-owned outfit, which finished runner-up to Jamaican club Harbour View in the 2007 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship.

Remarkable 84 goals

Nelson is on loan from Portmore FC in Jamaica. He logged a remarkable 84 goals in his first three seasons with Joe Public and this year he finished ahead of St Vincent and the Grenadines' veteran Kendal Velox, Guyana's Nigel Codrington and Collie Hercules and the Dominican Republic's Jonathan Frias as non-nationals on the scoring table.

Velox, of Caledonia AIA, finished fifth in scoring with 12 goals, while his teammate Codrington and Tobago United's Hercules ended joint fifth with 11 goals each.

Frias, who plays for Pro-League runners-up W Connection, ended eighth with 10 goals.

San Juan Jabloteh repeated as champions when they tallied 74 points to edge W Connection (72). Former champions North East Stars placed a distant third on 47 points.

Jabloteh will now focus on the Toyota Classic competition and the T&T Football Federation FA Trophy competitions, both starting this week.
