Jamaica crush Canada

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):

After losing to Barbados in their opening fixture and then having to share a point each with the United States in an abandoned game, defending champions Jamaica finally got a desired result with a nine-wicket wallop of Canada at Bourda yesterday.

When pacer and Man-of-the- Match Andrew Richardson reduced Canada to 104 all out off 36.5 overs nearly half an hour before the scheduled lunch break, a Jamaica victory was never in doubt in their third-round WICB Cup one-day match. And despite losing opener Horace Miller for 15 with the total on 27, Brenton Parchment clobbered an even, unbeaten half-century in an 81-run, second-wicket stand with Dave Bernard Jr who scored an unbeaten 40, to propel Jamaica to 108 for one off 20.5 overs and guarantee two bonus points.

Scores: CANADA 104 off 36.5 overs (Sunil Dhaniram 24; Andrew Richardson 4-36, Devon Brown 2-14, Gavin Wallace 2-14); JAMAICA 108 for one off 20.5 overs (Brenton Parchment 50 not out, David Bernard 40 not out).

TELLING PERFORMANCE

Discarded West Indies all-rounder, Omari Banks, produced a telling performance with the ball to fire the Leeward Islands to a 62-run upset of Barbados yesterday.

Playing at the Uitvlugt ground in West Coast Demerara, the right-arm off-spinner grabbed four for 51 as Barbados, chasing the Leewards' paltry 172 from 50 overs, surrendered timidly for 110 in just 31.2 overs.

With the victory, Leewards joined Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) at the top of the points table with 11 points after three matches. Barbados take on the Windwards in a crucial encounter today in their final round match-up.

Trinidad and Tobago stamped their superiority over the United States by romping to a comfortable six-wicket win yesterday. Playing at the Enmore Community Centre ground on the East Coast Demerara, T&T were inspired by two impressive half-centuries from skipper Daren Ganga and 18-year-old Adrian Barath.

Chasing a competitive 187 for victory from the allocation of 50 overs, T&T coasted to their target off 38 overs for the loss of four wickets with Ganga hitting 79 and Barath stroking 66.

The US were indebted to former Jamaica first-class player, Carl Wright, who fashioned an attractive 90; but their eventual total was insufficient as medium pacer Richard Kelly snared three for 34 from his allotted 10 overs to destroy the innings.
