Wounded St James seek redemption
Adrian Frater, News Editor

Western Bureau:

Stung by their surprise 3-2 loss to Frome Technical in their first round Group One fixture on Wednesday, Ben Francis KO champions, St James High School, will seek to put their ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup campaign back on track today when they meet Godfrey Stewart at Jarrett Park, starting at 3p.m.

"We made some silly mistakes against Frome Technical and it cost us dearly," said St James coach, Pastor Hugh Solomon, whose team was losing for the first time this season. "We have gone back to the drawing board and worked out a few things, so we should be ready for Godfrey Stewart."

Like their St James High counterparts, the Godfrey Stewart team, which drew 0-0 with Cedric Titus in their first round game, needs a win to strengthen their quarter-final round bid. In addition, they will be seeking to avenge their Ben Francis KO loss to the St James team.

Games of interest

The other games that should generate much interest are the Group Four clash between Lennon and Manchester High at Manchester High; the Group Five showdown between Bog Walk and St Thomas Technical at Dinthill; and the Dinthill Technical-Paul Bogle clash, also at Dinthill.

With victory in their first round games, the winner of the Lennon and Manchester High match would put themselves in a glorious position to top the group and earn the lone, automatic qualifier slot for the quarter-final round. Interestingly, a draw or a loss would not be detrimental for either team as a win in their final round game would be enough to keep them in qualifying contention.

The Bog Walk vs St Thomas Technical fixture is another such clash as, having won their first round games, the winner of this contest would be on the verge of sealing a semi-final place.

Interestingly, St Thomas, which surprised the much-vaunted Old Harbour 2-1 on Wednesday, have a superior preliminary round record to Bog Walk, who clipped St Mary Technical 1-0.

Dinthill, who were rampant in their 4-0 win against Annotto Bay - which probably eased some of the disappointment of their 4-0 loss to St James in Ben Francis KO final - will be gunning for more success against a Paul Bogle team, which surprised all and sundry in beating Glenmuir 2-1 on Wednesday.

Among the high-profile teams that cannot afford to lose today are Clarendon College, who will play Bellefield in Group Three, as they suffered a first round 2-1 loss to Lacovia High; St Elizabeth Technical, which went down 2-1 to Lennon in their Group Four game on Wednesday and are looking for redemption against Christiana today; and Genmuir and Old Harbour, who suffered surprise defeats on Wednesday.

The teams that will be gunning to strengthen their inter-zone bids today include Frome Technical, who will battle Cedric Titus at Drax Hall; Grange Hill, who will be seeking win number two against Cornwall College at Frome; and the much-vaunted Lacovia, who should start favourites against Spalding.
